Urethral Instillation of Povidone Iodine Reduces Post Cystoscopy UTI in Males

Dear All,

I chanced on finding this article from AIIMS stable published on 27th Feb 2020 in Scientific Reports.

We, as Urologists, perform Cystoscopies in abundance. One realizes that post Cystoscopy UTI is not infrequent. One may think what this article really adds to our knowledge. But such a simple procedure if it can eliminate post Cystoscopy UTI to a considerable extent is worth considering.

Wolf et al (2014) in the AUA best practice Guidelines of antibiotic prophylaxis did not recommend post procedural antibiotics in concurrence with procedures.

The concept of Bladder irrigation with Povidone Iodine with use of long term catheterisation was discussed long ago by Van Den Broek et al (1985) and SJ Sujka et al (1987).

Rishi Nayyar and Premnath Dogra have to be complimented in taking up such an innocuous looking study and informing us regarding the utility of this simple but effective addition after performing Cystoscopy.

I have a small plea that we Indian Urologists give Indian J Urology the priority when considering Publications.

With warm regards,

Venu
