Prof. Padmanabha Venugopal

Professor Emeritus and a teacher of teachers Professor P Venugopal, founder chairman of department of Urology, Kasturba Medical College Manipal became the teacher of teachers in the truest sense when he decided to lend his time and energies to the students of his students. When the department of Urology, Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore was recognized by the National Board of Examinations for postgraduate training in Urology, he gladly accepted to be the Emeritus Professor of urology in this department. He is today a teacher to the third generation of students in the country. He is perhaps the only one to achieve this feat. An alumnus of CMC Vellore and a direct disciple of Professor H S Bhat who is regarded as doyen of Urology in the country, Professor P Venugopal is also the past President of Urological Society of India (USI), the youngest till now to ascend to this position. He was instrumental in starting the Indian Journal of Urology (IJU) and was the Treasurer of the Journal for a long time. The inaugural issue of IJU was released in 1984 in the erstwhile Calcutta during his tenure as the President of the USI under the editorship of Prof Mahendra Bhandary. He was the chairman of the editorial board of the Journal from 1992 to 2000. His penchant for Peditric Urology is well known and he is one of the few who has a huge series of Posterior Urethral valves! At the age of 80 (He will be 80 on 14th February 2020) ,he conducts regular teaching at KMC, Mangalore which is attended not only by the postgraduates but the rest in the department. Clinical cases, problem solving, operative urology, journal clubs etc are some of the academic activities which take place under his supervision. He also teaches through e-loops in groups as well as one is to one basis for the students. This is outside his relentless efforts at his e-learning initiatives. (uroeducation@uroeducation.org , uroeducation@yahoogroups.com) His clinics for postgraduate students of the entire state in 2012, the year of inception of this department which is 8 year old now was a great success. At his instance, the department raised an endowment to hold a competitive examination for general surgery postgraduates to perpetuate the memory of his old colleague, Dr A B Rao, erstwhile professor of urology in KMC, Mangalore. He also extends clinical services to patients who choose to consult him on difficult issues and he is indeed the last opinion on complex urological problems. He also provides wise counsel to the staff, whenever they are in a dilemma with regards to patient care and treatment options. His insistence and belief in clinical examination has brought back the present generation of students from the madness of expensive investigations into the realistic realm of clinical care. There are two types of teachers. The first one burns to illuminate the path of his students. The second lights up the students so that the latter can illuminate the path to be taken on their own. Prof P Venugopal belongs to the second category. Students who come in contact with him become guides unto themselves. Such is the power of his teaching. Dr. Laxman Prabhu
