Male Fertility and COVID19 Pandemic

Dear All,

We are all in the midst of COVID 19 which has affected over 2 crore individuals world over this year and the end is not to be seen. The number of articles published (prepublications as well) are so numerous that many have started doubting the reliability of many of the articles published. If one wants to get a publication in a jiffy, write something on COVID 19 and it will get published even before the ink gets dried on the manuscript. Annals of Internal Medicine, NEJM are journals that come out with numerous publications on COVID19 and other Journals are not lagging behind.

Ashok Agarwal and his group have come out with an article on ‘Male Fertility and the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review of the Literature’.

The article summarizes all that has come out in this field and many aspects mentioned could have considerable importance in future. SARS-CoV-1 virus has reportedly been able to impact the testicles and cause viral orchitis and it is presumed that the same could happen with SARS-CoV-2. There are some articles addressing the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the semen.

How much all these are going to affect the fertility of men who have recovered from COVID19 will have to be seen.

It is an article worth a read and understanding.

With warm Regards,

Venu

    Dear All,

In continuation of the above Post for which there were no replies from our esteemed members, I am providing another article addressing the same issue of Possible Male Infertility in post COVID19.

This Pandemic is causing havoc around the globe and we in India have probably the 2nd largest number of cases. Though many in the elderly and those with other co-morbidities succumb to COVID19, many Younger patients survive. The attention is now focusing on what damages this Pandemic can cause in the Post COVID era is being looked into. Post COVID Lung problems and cardiac problems are being recognized. There are few studies addressing the effect of COVID19 on Fertility especially males. In my earlier write up, I had provided the link for an article by Ashok Agarwal et al which was a systematic review of literature. I am providing another article by Ranjith Ramasamy et al (published online Nov 3rd) on ‘Histopathology and Ultrastructural findings of Testis in fatal COVID 19 Patients’. Though the number of testis studied this way is few, it suggests the possible mechanism of how COVID19 can cause Infertility.

If these studies are going to be a reality, there could be a rise in Male Infertility in the future and causing far reaching consequences.

    With warm regards,

    Venu
